Films To Watch Out For

Bored with the current cinematic releases? Here's a few movies that have perked me up of late.
1. Zodiac [directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, Panic Room, Se7en), starring Jake Gyllenhaal (Jarhead, Brokeback Mountain)]
The tagline reads: There's more than one way to lose your life to a serial killer. Experimentally shot in Vipercam in the San Francisco Bay Area, the movie follows the people who got so involved in tracking down the infamous Zodiac serial killer that it ended up consuming their existences. Fincher's best, most subversive work, Fight Club, isn't mentioned in this poster (no doubt due to its comparatively low revenue from the BO), but I certainly haven't forgotten about what Fincher showed he was capable of, and while the stylistic flourishes will be kept to a minimum is Zodiac I would still watch any body of work Fincher would film, and with the talented Jake Gyllenhaal (whose movies rarely disappoint me) in front of the camera I'm hopeful that the result will be something worth watching.

2. A Scanner Darkly [Directed by Richard Linklater (Fast Food Nation), adapted from Philip K. Dick's novel of the same name, starring Keanu Reeves (The Matrix triology)
From an arresting animated visual style to a meaty sci-fi premise, this film looks very enticing. Set in a version of Orange County which is laden with an outbreak of heavy drug use, KR's character must battle his own perception to figure out what kind of reality he wants to inhabit.

3. The Painted Veil [Directed by John Curran, adapted from W. Somerset Maugham's book of the same name, starring Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive), Edward Norton (Fight Club, American History X, Keeping The Faith, Frida)]
Set in Shanghai and a remote city in China, the movie follows the unhappy marriage of the Fanes, who have to learn how to live with their marriage even though Kitty cheats on Walter. Finding out about his wife's infidelity leads Walter to take her with him to a cholera-ridden provincial town which is also breathtakingly beautiful. The tagline reads: Sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people.

4. Eastern Promises [Directed by David Cronenberg (eXistenZ, Spider, A History of Violence), starring Naomi Watts (21 Grams), Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings triology, The Indian Runner, A History of Violence)]
Exploring London's Russian mafia scene, a young mid-wife happens upon the dark underworld after an innocent investigation of the death of a prostitute.

5. Rendition [Directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi), starring Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, October Sky), Peter Sarsgaard (Kinsey, Jarhead)]
This is a thriller about an unconventional interrogation that a CIA agent happens to witness in Cairo. Shooting is apparently going to take place in the USA, South Africa and Egypt. The cast also includes Reese Witherspoon (but I'm less than thrilled about her presence). Aside: Peter Sarsgaard is a parent to Maggie Gyllenhaal's child, making him Jake's brother-in-law.

I haven't mentioned Stranger Than Fiction or Paris Je T'Aime here as I paid them tribute here.

I only saw the trailer yesterday, but it really pulled me in! I'm going to avoid reviews as I want to be unspoiled. It really sucks to be in Australia sometimes. ;o)
