Sydney, Day 8
February 26th 2008 10:51
I stayed up to watch the Academy Awards last night, and was happy to see Viggo there, looking cheerful and slightly corny. He seemed to have brought a young brown girl with him for a 'date', which is really sweet. He seems like a beautiful person.
I was like 'go, girl' when I saw that Tilda Swinton wasn't wearing any make-up. It takes a lot of character to swim against the tide like that. I had no idea that she was British - she pulls of the American accent so well.
Maybe Jon Stewart has grown on me, because I actually found myself enjoying his hosting. His recounting of the behind-the-scenes conversation between the Irish musical Oscar winners was a nice touch, because I'm always happy to gravitate towards the gayness in my life.
In other news, I read another chapter of Atonement yesterday - I'm now up to Chapter 3! Lol. The writing is very good, and McEwan repeats himself only slightly.
My dad told me that he may not be able to help me out be an exchange student in America, so today I investigated Thailand and Singapore as alternative options. I found out that Singapore has an encouraging-sounding English literature program (in English, no less), while the Bangkok university we are offered by USyd only offers Arts in Communications. I'm still hoping to go the US and/or Britain, but if it comes down to it then Singapore would be interesting... I could learn some Chinese while I'm there, finally! It's something I don't have the courage to do in Australia, as I got a bit freaked out by the tonal aspect when I took up a Beginners course in UNSW. I probably know what to expect now, but I'm still reluctant to consider it, as much as I would like to know Chinese. (Maybe I should learn, say, Hindi, for the fun of it!)
Anyhow, I'm still under the weather, and I'm starting to worry that I won't be back to normal in time for the Mardi Gras. In case you're wondering, I'm marching with the Cross-Campus Student Float, we are part of the 'red' section of the parade and our theme is 'Children of the Revolution'. The Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby sent me a Facebook message saying I could march with them, but I've already RSVP-ed to the CCSF, and I'm looking forward to marching in it. I hope we're at the beginning of the parade so then I can watch all the other floats crash on the grass of Moore Park. The floats get more interesting every year, it seems...
