Mardi Gras Photos & Why I'm Leaving Uni
March 5th 2008 02:50
First things first: Enjoy these photos from the 2008 Sydney Mardi Gras:
Now that that's over with...
I have major news to report. I have decided to get a job (not sure whether it'll be part-time or full-time) in Sydney for a few months so as to raise some money and relocate to Europe (I'm thinking of the UK), where I'll be working permanently. I'll probably get something quickly first, then look for something which matched my interests, like a job in a publishing house.
This means I need to get my Bulgarian passport as soon as possible. I've already contacted someone (a professional) who can help me with getting a job, and when she calls me back we will arrange a meeting.
I went over to www.studentflights.com.au and clicked on their Working Holidays section, and found the deal that slightly appealed to me before, Work & Play in the UK by working at a pub. I called the Randwick Student Flights shop and fortunately got a guy called Gus who had lived in the UK for some time. He was able to advise me that smoking was banned in pubs in England (hooray!), that the service no longer placed people in London city, but was available just about anywhere else including Brighton, Manchester, Oxford and Cambridge. I mentioned that I was getting a Bulgarian passport, and he said he was jealous, as that meant I could just show up and work at anything I liked for however long I liked.
The only catch to all this is I'll need to get a job here to save up for the airfare, accommodation and food while I search for a job, a bit of preliminary sight-seeing, and emergency cash. Knowing how expensive England is, I'll probably have to work for longer than I expect, but I'm sure it will all be worth it. England (or perhaps Scotland, which I should look into) sounds like the best option so far: It's in the middle of Europe and America, an English-speaking country, somewhere I've never been before, and with a strong culture of both tradition and innovation. I'm sure that there will be many pluses about living there.
What inspired me to think along these lines? Well, my uni courses failed to engage me, predictably. There is almost no focus on postmodernism in Semester 1, Year 1, so I felt like a fish out of water. Hopefully after I start working in England I can save up to study at the University of East Anglia, or perhaps the University of East London. Wish me luck! Australia is not the right place for me, and it's time I got my act together and acted upon all those impulses to leave.

As for where to live in England, I absolutely adore Edinburgh in Sctoland, Manchester is great but the partying scene is wild, Oxford is very peaceful and close enough to London to appreciate that too.
See you in about ten years when you have it out of your system

Thanks for the good luck, I'll need it with my past working history!
Thanks for the tips too, right now I'm thinking of London and Brighton, but Manchester interests me, and so does Oxford, so you never know. Edinburgh also sounds very interesting, I hope I have time to spend some time there, too.
Well, I've travelled a lot so far, and the more I travel the more I want to live somewhere else. Somewhere more happening, like London (that's the first city that comes to mind). I would ideally love to live in San Francisco, but it's much harder to find employment in the States than it is in Europe, especially since I will have a Bulgarian passport.
That said, I would consider coming to Sydney again periodically, as I have lots of friends and good memories here. But at the moment I can't see myself returning permanently. I figure I've spent enough time here already, and now it's time to explore more of the world.

ooohhh I say DO IT GIRL! You won`t look back, coming from one who did this a few years ago I can honestly say that it was the best 2 years of my life!
And brighton??? my dear sign those papers straight away! You will love it, love it, love it! And in a few months time is brighton pride - if you liked Mardi Gras you will love this and london pride is shortly after too I think.
You can`t smoke in pubs anymore in the UK so you`re ok on that front - if you aren`t into pub jobs why not try a bit of Au Pairing?
Have fun - oh I`m jealous now

I just bumped into him last weekend at Stonewall, actually!
We met at a U of Syd QuAC (Queer Action Collective) last year...
I wrote a long post about my experience of the Mardi Gras, you've probably read it already but it's here just in case.

P.S. Between you and me, I'm pretty sure that Viggo is bisexual. if you like him, check out www.percevalpress.com, his publishing site... he posts up all sorts of interesting articles and poems every week.

He hasn't actually said that he is, and I should have better things to do than speculate about his sexuality, but... check out this clip from the extras on the Return of the King (Lord of the Rings) DVD. And then there's his acting in Eastern Promises, when he's seducing a Russian mobster who has feelings for him so as to be able to manipulate him - it seems very natural and effortless. Oh, and kissing Bernard Hill on the nose (very cute) in an extra on The Two Towers (LotR). Actually, the interactions between a lot of the LotR cast are quite homoerotic and they have a rabid RPS (gay-themed fan fiction about real-life people) following to this day.
Viggo another man = the stuff of my fantasies!
