This blog is banned in Iran!
July 6th 2008 03:02
Woohoo, I must be doing something right... but what could it be? Is it all that talk about homosexuality I've been doing recently that's inspired the censorship bureau to get active(because as you may have heard, according to Ahmadinejad there are no homosexuals in his country)?
I only found this out because I have newly acquired a friend in Iran who tried to access my blog, and thanks to the restrictions of internet materials deemed 'suitable' for Iranian users, she can't do it.
Interesting. I intend to take it as a compliment, because I am very proud of everything I have written on Postmodern Critic, and the banning of this site suggests that it contains material which not everyone feels comfortable viewing. I'm all about getting people to step out of their comfort zones and ask questions - particularly about authority, totalising philosophies (metanarratives) and social conventions.
So I'm going to celebrate! (And feel bad that not everyone who is interested in my writing can access it.)
Oh well, here's to Postmodern Critic!

Kamil - It's definitely a possibility, because I don't think they would just ban any site with the word 'homosexual' on it as Ahmed suggests. I mean, people could just be reiterating the party line, which is that there are no homosexuals in Iran, or they could be saying hateful things about them which I'm sure the government wouldn't have a problem with...
Ahmed - Don't worry, I haven't forgotten you... expect to get responses on PADSOC this week...
I'm surprised that you tolerated my site long enough to write a lengthy comment in response... or maybe you just can't stand it that the post got popular, spiteful little thing that you are?
And by the way, I don't pretend to know everything about a person about their display pic, but it's always representative of their worldview in some way, and being able to extract the extent to which it does is something English literature students do so well.
Fogster - Thanks gorgeous... I would ask my friend to try to look up a few Orble sites because I'm curious too, but I don't know her that well yet so I would feel a bit uncomfortable asking.
I've been back in Syd for three days now, and you can read about the first 24 hours or so of my trip here.
See ya around~
