Cuteness, Morbidity and Chiho Aoshima

I found an interesting article on Chiho Aoshima on kitsunenoir.com:
They focused on the quote that I found the most controversial and thought-provoking below:
The author of the article gets a sense of 'bipolar tension' from her work, which I think is powerfully articulated. To me it feels like Chiho is patronising her pain by asking it to always conform to the world of 'kawaii' (cute). I think it might be therapeutic for her to paint some harsh dark pieces, so she can get it out of her system, and then explore her manga-like imagery with more pleasant subject matters, like in 'A Fleeting Moment of Happiness'.
Perhaps it would be the beginning of a new style of hers, which is neither kawaii nor non-kawaii, but something in between.
I get a funny feeling whenever I hear about the 'superflat' movement... I don't think 'flat' is a positive adjective most of the time, so 'superflat' sounds like a let down... kind of like a deflation into the 2D realm. And yet I am quite drawn to Chiho's style, so perhaps I'm just indulging in my superficial response to the terminology.
Anyhow, this lady has something unique and potentially exquisite going on so I'm going to keep an eye on her.
