One Satire Deserves Another, or 'Is Jake Gyllenhaal a postmodernist?' : Engaging with Fan Culture and the Powers of Parody
It's My [Performance of Disenchantment]: A Profusion of Proclamations and Deconstructing the Simulation of Schizophrenia (an introduction to Deleuze and Guattari?)
At I-don't-know-how-many shots per minute, MTV ensures that your eye remains stimulated and that you come back again for more therapeutic drive-throughs which deal with the human condition. Is it merely a superficial, lazy process? Well, I say it's what you make it - if you want it to be stimulus for your self-help practice then that's exactly what it will be. When you're given so many opportunities to delve into the text by both tuning in and out, it provides you a revolutionary alternative to other more 'steady' and 'straight-forward' narrative exposition. MTV can take you from a close up to a wide shot back to a close up and into a medium pan in half the time it takes other networks to get their multiplicity established, so what are you waiting for? How many flashes per minute do you desire to envigorate your soul?We make narrativity what it is, so having MTV help me compose striking visual compositions in my own mind's eye is a huge bonus if you ask me.
- Video Surveillance
Once upon a time Channel V ran a late night to early morning programme called 'VIdeo Surveillance' ... I think the Foucaltian notion of surveillance informs this brilliantly, with society self-regulating itself to the point that the videos being displayed are being monitored themselves - there's a layer of self-consciousness here that makes it very edgy for people who are familiar with F's theories.
Postmodern Theory as Self-Help Practice, or Reinventing 'The Fantasy Myth' (w/ Buffy, Focus Features and 'If On A Winter's Night A Traveler' by Italo Calvino)
5:10pm, March 17 - Theory Profusion
Q - If you could choose to physically alter the colour of your skin according to your mood, would you do it?
